With emergency room visits from tick bites on the rise, there’s growing concern about children at summer camps across the Hudson Valley.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 127 out of every 100,000 ER visits this year were due to tick bites — the highest rate since 2017.
At the Jefferson School in New Rochelle, camp officials are taking steps to keep kids safe.
“We do have two orientations, we have one at City Hall, then we have one on site,” said Matthew Summa, site camp director. “And when we're here at Jefferson, we try to walk the grounds, kind of where those areas might be to avoid. Counselors are trained to avoid those areas.”
The goal is to reduce exposure and keep campers safe as tick activity increases.
