Security monitor Tyreek Johnson was recognized by the Newburgh Enlarged City School District Board of Education on Tuesday for saving a student's life.

Earlier this month, the district says a first-grader was choking in the cafeteria when Johnson jumped in and used the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge the food.

It happened at Vails Gate STEAM Academy in New Windsor.

"He's is very hands on, he works with the kids throughout the hallways and the cafeteria," said Vails Gate STEAM Academy Principal Gillian Matos, "He's built such strong relationships with them and they [the students] do feel very safe with him in the building."

In the video, you can see Johnson notice a student in distress. Without hesitation, Johnson jumps into action. He just happened to be at the right place at the right time.

"I was training another security guard and I was just letting him know to be vigilant, pay attention to the kids, they might raise their hand if they need help," said Johnson.

In was in that moment Johnson had to remember his training.

"When the student couldn't verbalize to me what was going on, in that moment, I knew it was the real deal," he said.

This isn't the first time Johnson saved a student's life. In 2023, News 12 reported on how Johnson saved a second-grade student from choking on nachos.

According to the district, all security monitors have basic first aid, CPR and AED training. This year, all administrators have received CPR and AED training as well.

"Hopefully, this never happens again. I can just say that, if it does, the school monitors and the schools are prepared," said the Director of Safety and Security Stephen Sager.

The first grader is safe thanks to the quick response.
