The Cross County Center in Yonkers is getting a major upgrade, with construction underway on a 60,000‑square‑foot retail expansion and a four‑acre park.

The retail center opened in 1954 with 30 stores. Today, it includes more than 100 retail, dining, educational and entertainment spaces.

“Cross County was the first ever mall built in America, the first outdoor mall. They always seem to be reinventing themselves,” said Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano.

Tuesday coverage

The expansion will rise on the north lot and will include a super‑flagship location for a national apparel retailer, along with underground parking.

“Well, more shopping is a plus,” said Yonkers resident Deborah Iezza.

“For me, it’s perfect,” said Claudia, who works near the Cross County Center.

Plans also call for a four‑acre park and boardwalk with space for farmers markets, SummerFest events and wellness programs.

“I love to shop,” Iezza said. “And the park, the park for the kids, that would be really nice.”

The developers, Marx Realty, say the Cross County Center sees 14 million visitors annually.

Neighbors say they are worried about extra traffic.

Spano says that because the center sits near the New York State Thruway and the Cross County Parkway, there is ample opportunity for drivers to exit the mall area.

There is no word yet on when the additions are expected to be completed.
