The Town of Yorktown Town Board rejected on Tuesday night a controversial cell phone tower that was proposed in the community.

Granite Springs Road planned the project with the goal to address gaps in cellular coverage.

Board members said there were a number of factors they had to consider but ultimately felt that they made the right decision.

Four board members rejected the proposal, except Councilwoman Susan Siegel. She declined to vote.

The resolution that was posted online outlines the concerns the board had.

"Some of the wetlands, some of the storm retention, some of the, the actual RF reports. There was a lack of some of the facts that we wanted without a doubt," said Yorktown Town Supervisor Ed Lachterman.

Lachterman said he appreciated those who came to voice their concerns.

"The people who really read and did their research, it's like having a whole team behind you to look at the things, which is very, very important," he said.

Residents agree that it feel like their voices were heard.

"I think it was a painstaking bunch of hearings that they had to endure. They were 3, 4 hours long, each one of them. I think they did a good job listening," said Yorktown resident Stephen Gardner.

"It was tremendous for us. I mean, we've been sort of dealing with this for five years, right?" said Yorktown resident Douglas Erickson.

News 12 asked Lachterman if there was any potential that the developers could come back and try again. He said that while that is a possibility, he feels that it's a closed deal on their end.

News 12 reached out to Homeland Towers LLC but did not hear back as of Tuesday night.
