A man is dead after being shot by police in Mott Haven Thursday morning.
Police say they apprehended 44-year-old Lucien Colon, a known sex offender in New York State with active bench and parole warrants.
He was believed to be in an apartment in 105 Willis Ave. Police met with women at the door who gave officers permission to enter.
That was when police found Colon with a firearm in his hand. Police asked him to show his hands and he responded that he had a gun. Officers repeatedly asked him to step out of the room and he responded with, "its not gonna happen."
Officers interacted with Colon for a minute and a half as they tried to de-escalate the situation and gave him multiple commands to drop the firearm. One of the officers fired a shot and struck Colon. They rendered aid before EMS took him to NYC Health+Hospitals/Lincoln and was pronounced deceased. A firearm was found at the scene.
Some officers were also taken to an area hospital for evaluation.
Colon was on parole for a 2013 murder and was released in 2023. He was also found guilty of rape in 1997 and attempted murder in 1995.
