Shelton teen creates project to support NICU families across CT

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) stays for families can range from a few days to several months. In that timeframe, it's important for them to feel supported.
Cait Salemme created a project to do that. It's called the Neonatal Support Project.
"My dad was a NICU baby at Yale, and he was born at 24 weeks, only 2.9 pounds. And he was really struggling. And his twin brother was, too," Salemme said.
That was 47 years ago. Now, Salemme wants to give back to the field and the hospital that helped her family. Each care package has items like clothing, books, and medical supplies to help families relieve stress.
"We're most in need of essential items like diapers, wipes and clothing," she said.
Salemme said they have an excess of donations, like new baby formula, that hospitals are not permitted to accept, but she would like to give them to anyone in need.
