Layoff warnings sent to Bayonne hospital workers but company rules out June cuts

Changes are coming for workers at a Bayonne hospital after nearly 1,000 employees received formal notices tied to a restructuring, though hospital officials say layoffs are not expected in June.
Hudson Regional Health issued the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) last week to 967 employees at Bayonne University Hospital, according to the New Jersey Department of Labor.
WARN notices often indicate potential layoffs. Hospital officials said that will not be the case at Bayonne this June.
In a statement provided this morning, Hudson Regional Health said the notices were required as part of a transition in ownership and operations following the previous operator’s bankruptcy.
The company said the process includes a transfer of ownership, licensing and operating business, which legally triggered the WARN notices as employees move under the new ownership.
Hudson Regional Health said it does not anticipate any layoffs in June. The effective date listed on the WARN notices is June 29. There has been no word on which positions would be affected.
Hudson Regional Health is the same company that recently shut down Heights Hospital in Jersey City after projecting a $30 million loss this year.

In 2024, HRH marked a milestone moment for healthcare in Hudson County as it took over operations at Bayonne University Hospital following the previous operator’s declaration of bankruptcy. HRH has reassured staff that this ongoing process currently involves a transfer of ownership, license and operating business, which triggered a legal requirement of a WARN notice as Bayonne’s employees will be transitioned to HRH’s new ownership.
Over the past 15 months, HRH has invested tens of millions of dollars to enhance care at Bayonne University Hospital and remains committed to advancing the hospital as a premier acute-care facility in the tri-state region.
