It was a celebration of wagging tails and statewide pride as the New Jersey Lottery officially unveiled the winners of its “Jersey’s Top Dogs” contest at Columbus Park.

Eighteen dogs were selected as the contest’s top winners after thousands of entries were submitted from pet owners across New Jersey. The program marks a first for the lottery—featuring real dogs on a scratch-off ticket designed with public input.

According to the lottery, the contest began with a statewide public vote that narrowed thousands of submissions down to a Top 50. From there, 18 final dogs were chosen to represent standout pets from across the Garden State.

The winning dogs will now be featured on the upcoming “Jersey Dog” scratch-off ticket, set to launch May 4. The ticket will include 50 dogs in total, with the 18 winners highlighted on the front of the design.

Officials say this is the first time the public has helped shape a New Jersey Lottery scratch-off ticket—and the first time real dogs will appear as featured stars.

At Tuesday’s event, emotions ran high for many of the owners.

“This morning felt like Christmas—we were just so excited to finally be here, Alicia Marino, a dog owner from Roselle Park.

For some families, the journey was fueled by strong community support. Marino who works at Roosevelt Park High School, said students and staff rallied behind their dog, voting repeatedly throughout the contest.

“When the kids found out, they went crazy,” she said. “Once they got involved, I knew we had a real chance.”

Another owner recalled the moment they received the news, describing it as unforgettable.

"I got an email and I freaked out I immediately called my family and I was like oh my god jersey, one it was literally the best day of my life," said Julia Paster.

Beyond the contest, many of the winning dogs were described as beloved family pets with everyday personalities— enjoying belly rubs, treats, swimming, and even neighborhood playmates.

As for the Lottery, officials say the project was designed to connect with communities in a new way while celebrating pets that reflect the personality and spirit of New Jersey.

The “Jersey Dog” scratch-off ticket will be available statewide beginning May 4.
