Residents who fail to pick up after their dogs will now face higher fines in Yonkers.
"There's certain areas where you see a lot of poop," said Yonkers resident Andrew Smith.
Mayor Mike Spano announced on Monday that the City Council approved legislation reclassifying the act from a Class III to a Class II offense.
The original fine of $1,500 has risen to $5,000.
The city says dog waste is among residents’ top reported complaints.
"That is a problem," said Mayor Spano.
Nearly 100 summonses have been issued since February.
Spano says more bags and garbage cans have been added across the city.
Yonkers police say officers will keep an eye out as they're out on patrol. If they catch someone not cleaning up after their dog, police will issue a summons. A spokesperson for the department says if they have to, they'll play close attention to the areas with frequent complaints and if needed conduct investigations.
Dog owners say that picking up after your dog is easy.
"I just do it immediately, I don't leave it there," said Yonkers resident Courtney Long.
