Belleville declared a state of emergency and closed all schools this morning as investigators began looking into whether welding work may have sparked the massive warehouse fire that spread to multiple buildings and forced evacuations.

Sunday coverage

The fire broke out Sunday afternoon at a commercial mattress warehouse complex in Essex County and quickly escalated into a multi‑alarm emergency. Officials say three to four warehouses within the industrial complex were involved as flames spread rapidly.

Belleville Mayor Michael Melham told News 12 New Jersey that while the investigation is ongoing, welding may have played a role in starting the fire.

The mayor says a combination of sparks and flammable materials at the site is being considered as a possible cause.

Town officials say the fire grew out of control overnight, prompting the township’s Office of Emergency Management to declare a state of emergency.

Strong winds fueled the blaze, helping embers spread and ignite at least two secondary fires. Portions of multiple buildings collapsed as thick black smoke billowed into the sky and could be seen for miles.

The mayor says hazardous materials were stored on site, including oxygen and helium tanks, raising concerns about potential explosions. A nearby cardboard factory was also identified as a major concern due to its proximity to the fire.

Firefighting efforts were complicated by low water pressure, at times limiting crews’ ability to attack the flames. The Department of Public Works worked to tap into a larger water main to improve water supply.

Firefighters from neighboring communities, including Newark, Bloomfield, Orange and Lyndhurst, responded to provide mutual aid.

Multiple families were evacuated from the area around Cortlandt Street. As of Sunday night, several homes and businesses were without power, and some were also without water.

The American Red Cross assisted families affected by the fire, providing emergency lodging, food and clothing to eight people across four families. Disaster health, mental health and spiritual care services were also offered.

Crews remain on scene this morning as firefighters continue to battle hot spots. Officials say no injuries have been reported, and the investigation into the cause remains ongoing.
