Traffic is expected to be heavy at the George Washington Bridge this weekend after a debris incident disrupted travel.
Officials say it took nearly a full day to complete repairs after debris fell into car lanes last week, forcing closures and causing gridlock.
The Port Authority says harsh winter weather was to blame.
Officials said a mix of snow, ice and road salt got into expansion joints, damaging concrete and leading to the debris falling.
“That mixture of snow and ice…allowed snow and ice to get through there along with the salt further corroding some of the concrete,” a Port Authority official said.
The issue is not the first of its kind.
Earlier this month, dashcam video showed debris falling onto a car on the Cross Bronx Expressway near the bridge.
The driver was not hurt.
The Port Authority says it is now installing wire netting to help catch any future debris.
