A rare and massive fish was recently caught in the Hudson River as part of a research effort in Dutchess County.
Department of Environmental Conservation researchers say the Atlantic sturgeon was found near Hyde Park.
The fish weighed about 116 pounds and measured nearly six feet long.
Researchers took DNA samples and tagged the sturgeon to track its migration before releasing it back into the river.
Officials say the species is currently moving upstream as part of its annual spawning cycle.
“This is the largest fish that lives in the Hudson River and they are here on their annual spawning migration,” a researcher said.
Atlantic sturgeon are federally protected, making it illegal to catch or keep them.
