The annual Ossining RiverJam festival took place Thursday evening, bringing live music, food and fireworks to the waterfront.

The event happened at the Louis Engel Waterfront Park and is expected to draw thousands of people. This year, however, organizers say safety is top of mind when it comes to the dangerous heat.

"We have Ossining Volunteer Ambulance on site. They'll be going around and if people have any issues, they can attend to those people," said Bill Garrison, superintendent of the Ossining Recreation and Parks.

Organizers encouraged attendees to come prepared for the heat.

"Bring some fans if you've got them, that's what I'm doing and, you know, just take care of yourself," said Gregory Young, vice president of the Greater Ossining Chamber of Commerce.

News 12 went around and asked people how they stayed cool.

"We have about a thousand bags of ice and just, you know, trying to do that, with a lot of air conditioning in the truck whenever we can get it," said Ro Moran, with Brother's Fish & Chips.

"We brought some fans, some water and we're just going to have a good time," said performer Mike Risko.

RiverJam festivities began with live musical performances. There was also a reading of the Declaration of Independence and a fireworks show to end the night.

Officials say extra handicapped parking spaces were made available this year as a precaution because of the extreme temperatures.
