Mosquito sample tests positive for West Nile virus in Haverstraw

The first positive West Nile mosquito test of the season was recently confirmed in Rockland County.
Officials say the sample was collected in the Town of Haverstraw the week of June 22. Sixty-six mosquito pools have been submitted to testing so far this year.
No human cases of the West Nile virus have been reported in the county this season. The most recent confirmed human case occurred in 2025.
Experts say most people bitten by an infected mosquito will experience little to no symptoms. However, symptoms can become severe in certain cases.
"Those who have higher risk are those above age 60, 65 years old and those with a weakened immune system,” said Stony Brook Medicine infectious disease physician Dr. Luis Marcos. “Symptoms usually are high fevers, headaches and it can present meningitis or encephalitis, or swelling of the brain."
Rockland health officials say it is especially important to be proactive ahead of outdoor gatherings and celebrations. Doctors recommend wearing repellant, long sleeve shirts, pants and keeping windows and door screens in good condition.
