Judge delays start of Lockerbie bombing trial over new evidence

A federal judge has postponed the trial for the Libyan man charged in connection with the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.
Jury selection for the federal trial of Abu Agila Mohammad Mas'ud Kheir Al-Marimi was supposed to begin on Wednesday. Prosecutors allege he built the bomb that destroyed the aircraft.
The delay comes after new evidence surfaced in the nearly 40-year-old case. While the judge did not disclose the nature of the evidence, he said defense attorneys need additional time to review it.
The New York bound plane exploded over Lockerbie, Scotland minutes after it took off from London on Dec. 21, 1988.
All 259 souls on board were killed, including 10 people from Long Island. 11 individuals on the ground also died.
Prosecutors allege Al-Marimi and others carried out the bombing at the direction of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, who was overthrown and killed during Libya's 2011 civil war.
