A former Hudson Valley retreat has become a destination where visitors can experience art, performances and hands-on creativity.
The KinoSaito Arts Center in Verplanck is a nonprofit arts center dedicated to the creation and support of abstract art.
"We're a nonprofit arts center rooted in the creation and support of abstract art," said Executive Director Holly Hobart.
The center was founded in honor of Japanese-American artist Kikuo Saito, who purchased the property with his wife, Mikiko, as a place to escape the city.
Visitors can explore rotating exhibitions, view live performances and participate in workshops designed for artists of all ages and experience levels.
The facility includes two galleries, artist residency studios, a performance space and a classroom for instructional programs.
One gallery is dedicated to Kikuo Saito's work and features the final piece he completed before his death.
Other exhibitions showcase contemporary artists and large-scale installations created specifically for the center.
Admission is free, a decision organizers say helps make art accessible to everyone.
"We don't charge for admission, so really trying to be as accessible to everybody as possible," Hobart said.
The center also offers workshops in watercolor, drawing, oil painting, collage and mixed media.
The classes are designed for beginners and experienced artists alike.
"If you're coming to the art center, get a cup of coffee, and then you can take your coffee and enjoy it in our garden, which is lovely at this time of year," Hobart said.
Today, KinoSaito continues to serve as a gathering place for visual art, education and performance while honoring the artistic legacy of Kikuo Saito.
