A debate is growing over federal immigration policies and their impact on members of the military.
U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut is criticizing the possibility that some current or former service members could face deportation.
"Military men and women who've raised their right hands to serve and sacrifice for our country to be now threatened with deportation, absolutely absurd and also hugely misguided for military preparedness and readiness; it imperils our national defense," Blumenthal said.
The comments come as the Trump administration continues its immigration enforcement efforts.
The administration has said that while it values military service, serving in the armed forces does not automatically grant lawful immigration status or exempt anyone from federal immigration laws.
