A suspected lightning strike during Thursday’s storms left a Sayreville home heavily damaged and uninhabitable.

The fire happened on Jensen Road as severe weather moved through the area.

Officials believe lightning may have struck the home, sparking the fire.

The house suffered significant damage, including a hole in the roof, broken windows and extensive damage throughout the structure.

An unsafe-structure notice has been posted on the front door.

Debris and belongings from inside the home could be seen scattered across the front yard Friday morning.

Neighbors say the woman who lives in the home was able to get out safely.

Residents in the neighborhood are now helping her in the aftermath of the fire.

Radar showed numerous lightning strikes across the Sayreville area between about 12:30 and 1 p.m. as heavy rain moved through Middlesex County.

They say lightning can’t strike twice, but in this neighborhood, it did.

Around the Fourth of July last year, another home on Jensen Road a few doors down caught fire after being struck by lightning.

Mike Sanchez, the owner, says it was his parents’ house at the time.

“It hit outside on the shed and sent fire to the outside of the house,” Sanchez said.

The neighborhood will never forget these storms.

“It was the boom heard around the neighborhood,” said Gabriel Ferrari. “I know some of us are getting a little more worried, but we’re trying to stay calm through all this.”

“Not great luck, what do you say, right?” said Phil Thomas.
