Bronx homeowners struggling with high energy bills may be eligible for programs that can help make their homes more energy efficient while reducing costs.

Bronx Neighborhood Housing Services is a partner in the Bronx and Brooklyn Energy Hub, a regional NYSERDA initiative that connects homeowners and residents with energy-efficiency programs, grants and other financial incentives.

Energy advisor Avril McKenzie says the program works with homeowners to assess their needs and determine what assistance they may qualify for.

“We assist clients, homeowners, residents to assess the energy efficiency of their home and to access energy efficiency grants, programs, financial opportunities,” McKenzie said.

Bronx homeowner Ilan Ahmed says he learned firsthand how difficult it can be to navigate the process. Ahmed, who purchased his home in 2015, said he initially did not know what assistance was available and later struggled to complete the application process online.

With help from Bronx NHS, Ahmed says he was eventually able to receive improvements to his home, including three new windows and insulation in his attic.

“I know my situation. It was worse situation, and I got help,” Ahmed said. “So definitely I will recommend for others also.”

Available assistance can include insulation, air sealing, energy-efficient lighting, digital thermostats, heat-pump water heaters and certain electrical upgrades, depending on the program and a household’s eligibility.

Bronx NHS also assists homeowners with issues including utility arrears and heating problems and can provide information about solar and community solar opportunities.

Homeowners interested in assistance can contact Bronx NHS or the Bronx and Brooklyn Energy Hub to learn which programs they may qualify for and get help navigating the application process.
