A White Plains woman is facing child abandonment charges after authorities say she gave birth inside an employee bathroom at a ShopRite and left the newborn in a trash can.
According to court records, 32-year-old Guerlande Atila allegedly gave birth in the store's employee bathroom in White Plains before placing the infant inside a trash can.
Atila faced a judge for the first time Wednesday afternoon.
Authorities said the baby was discovered about seven hours later by an employee and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
The child is now in the care of Child Protective Services, according to police.
Atila has been charged with child abandonment. She was released on her own recognizance and is due back in court mid-September.
