A local nonprofit that helps survivors of human trafficking has bought a long-time gourmet market in downtown Fairfield to help financially support its mission.

The Pantry has been a beloved staple at 1580 Post Road for over 23 years thanks to its bakery, deli, prepared foods and catering.

"We try to use as many local farms and products," explained Veronica Buzelle, head pastry chef at The Pantry. "Everything is always fresh, and I think that's what people enjoy the most."

Now, the familiar business has a new owner--the Partnership to End Human Trafficking, known as PEHT. All the revenue from The Pantry will help fund PEHT's work.

"We are a direct services organization serving survivors of human trafficking in Connecticut. We have two safe homes in Connecticut, so we offer housing, services and case management support, and a big part of what we do is offer employment to survivors," explained Katie Rolleri Wheeler, CFO and COO of PEHT.

Rolleri Wheeler's uncle, Andy Rolleri, is one of the original founders of The Pantry.

"We knew that he was hoping to be making a transition into retirement, and we had some inside information that the pantry would be a business we could potentially acquire," Rolleri Wheeler said regarding how the purchase came to be.

"I think it's amazing that we're now helping a nonprofit," said Buzelle, who's worked at The Pantry for seven years and runs the bakery. "It's just wonderful to be a part of."

The Pantry becomes PEHT's second social enterprise business. The organization already operates the PEHT Shop, which sells candles, jewelry and handmade goods created by survivors, while also providing job opportunities. The store opened in Bridgeport in 2021, then in 2024, moved to 1630 Post Road in Fairfield, just a few doors down from The Pantry.

"The goal being creating an environment where they can heal and be empowered for long-term financial stability and independence," Rolleri Wheeler told News 12.

She says the daily operations aren't changing much. The Pantry's employees are staying on, and customers can expect the same products they've come to know. PEHT plans to create additional job opportunities for people in its programs.

"The Pantry that everyone has known and loved for over 23 years is still that same pantry," Rolleri Wheeler stressed.

"All the recipes that everybody comes in to buy every week is all going to be the same. It's all the same people cooking," Buzelle added.

So whether customers are stopping in for a pastry, a sandwich or their weekly favorites, they can feel good knowing their purchases are helping a mission beyond the market's walls.

"They're supporting a greater cause now when they shop here," Rolleri Wheeler said.
