Police are investigating an online incident involving a student in a Suffolk County school.
Shoreham-Wading River School District alerted the community in a letter after rumors began circulating over the weekend.
According to school officials, the situation was brought to their attention through a report issued by GoGuardian, a student online safety platform.
It was determined that the concerning and inappropriate online behavior involved an individual middle school aged student.
Suffolk County police tell News 12 that Special Victims Unit detectives are investigating after a 12-year-old female was contacted by an unknown person on Oct. 16.
Superintendent of Schools, Gerard Poole, says they do not believe any other students or staff members were involved and it happened off district property, after school hours.
“The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priorities. We take all reports of concerning behavior very seriously,” Poole said in the letter to families.
No additional details are being shared by the district out of respect for student privacy.
