A house fire displaced three residents in Montrose on Friday, amid below freezing temperatures.

Fire officials say reports came in at around 10 a.m. of a structure on fire at 47 Dutch St.

Upon arrival, there was heavy smoke coming from the roof and chimney.

More than eight fire departments responded to the scene, including Verplank and Buchanan. Even with multiple units, the house, which sits atop a steep street, brought its own unique challenges.

"Upon arrival, the whole driveway was a sheet of ice. My vehicle had a tough time getting up. Engine 122 had to use their chains to get up, and I kept all of their apparatus on the main road where it was clear and just had personnel come to the location," said First Assistant Chief Tom Gilleo, with Montrose Fire Department.

Icy roads and below freezing temperatures were only part of the battle.

"Up here on top of the hill, the wind played a factor because the wind fueled the fire," said Chief Gilleo.

Due to the damage, three of the property's residents are displaced.

"The house is going to be uninhabitable at this time. We had heavy fire throughout in the attic of the house so we had to pull ceilings all throughout the whole structure," said Chief Gilleo.

No injuries were reported.
