A massive five-alarm fire shook Mount Vernon overnight, sending flames shooting from the top floor of a large apartment complex and forcing dramatic rescues in the early-morning hours.
The fire sparked around 1 a.m. in a seventh-floor unit, drawing a joint response from both Mount Vernon and Yonkers fire crews. Firefighters battled intense heat and heavy smoke as they made their way to Apartment 7F, where the fire is believed to have started. Crews smashed through windows and used ladders to pull two trapped occupants to safety.
Both residents were rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi and are in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries. A firefighter suffered a minor hand injury, and another was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.
Investigators have not yet determined the cause, though officials on scene say the blaze may have begun in the apartment’s kitchen.
Residents described a chaotic wake-up.
“Around 3 o’clock…the police were knocking…saying there’s a fire,” said Linda, who lives in the building. “They broke the windows and got them out. We thought it was ending, but then it spread across the ceiling.”
Firefighters remained on scene into the morning to contain hotspots and secure the building.
The fire remains active as of Sunday afternoon.
An emergency Red Cross facility has been set up in the area to help those affected.
