Attorney General Letitia James is warning residents that some car washes may try to scam customers around Passover.
She says there have been reports in previous years of car washes in predominantly Orthodox Jewish communities raising prices as much as 50% for Jewish customers trying to clean their cars for Passover.
Many Jewish communities clean their spaces before the holiday to get rid of "chametz,” which are foods with leavening products, because they're banned during Passover as a reminder of the Israelites fleeing Egypt with unrisen dough.
Letitia says she's sent letters warning car washes. Anyone who sees this happening can file a complaint with her office.
