The Austin Police Department says Douglas John Kantor, 25, was killed in the mass shooting that injured 13 others.
Kantor, who was from Airmont, was engaged and living in Michigan after just graduating from Michigan State University in May.
Kantor was vacationing in Austin over the weekend when gunshots rang out early Saturday on Sixth Street. He was rushed to a hospital, where he died Sunday.
"I was supposed to go I would have been standing right next to him," said Keith Jeffers, a lifelong friend of Kantor. Jeffers said family obligations forced him to skip the trip. "It's just unbelievable knowing he wanted to have a family he would have been a great father, its just its sick and terrible."
Jeffers added that he and Kantor's other friends will cherish the memories they have to make it through their grief.
"He's going to want us, me and my friends and everyone to stay strong together. He's the type that wants people to progress and get stronger so we're going to stay together and honor him in the right way and keep his legacy alive," he said.
So far, one 14-year-old suspect is in custody for the shooting. There is no word yet on what charges the suspect will face.
