A Yorktown Assembly member is calling on the state legislature to pass a new bill that would end parole for people convicted of killing cops.
Assembly Member Matt Slater says he is spearheading the bill, which comes on the heels of the Parole Board's decision to release Scott Cobb, who drove the getaway car in the 1988 assassination of NYPD officer Edward Byrne. Byrne was killed in Queens in a murder-for-hire execution by Cobb and three accomplices while guarding a witness planning to testify against a New York City drug kingpin.
The bill would mandate life without parole for the murder of a police officer or any first responder.
