A sports program for athletes with disabilities is preparing for their national indoor field hockey tournament next month in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
News 12’s Ben Nandy was at the Somers Sports Arena to meet with the team of 17 young athletes and hear more about the big game.
Able-Athletics is an inclusive sports program that features coaches, volunteers and therapists who help players get the most out of the league.
"Some of our athletes started off being able to hold a stick. We ended up dribbling and ended up playing defense and learning the fundamentals of field hockey when for some kids, just being able to sit and be part of a group is a big accomplishment for them,” said Able Athletics field hockey director Melissa Ponzio.
