Attorney Gloria Allred and the mother of a Dominican College student who committed suicide blasted the school Wednesday for failing to properly probe a rape allegation.
Megan Wright claimed three men raped her at Hertel Residence Hall in May 2006 after a late-night party. A few months later, Wright took her own life.
At a news conference, Allred said a sign reading "I want to have sex" was held up in front of a dorm security camera with Wright's alleged signature scrawled at the bottom. The signature does not match Wright's handwriting on a roommate questionnaire.
"All of this should have at least raised questions about the issue of consent," Allred said. "The taint is there. The whiff, the smell of conflict permeates this investigation."According to Allred, the college turned over the evidence to an Orangetown police detective who was also a paid instructor at Dominican.
Cynthia McGrath, Wright's mother, filed a civil suit against the college last year. The Rockland district attorney said evidence doesn't support criminal prosecution in the rape allegations.
The attorney representing the college released a statement that reads: "Dominican College places the highest priority on the safety and well being of its students and the college diligently investigates all incident claims made by any student. It cooperates with law enforcement officials on all investigations of potential crimes involving students."
