Authorities are investigating the fire that broke out at a Middletown apartment building last night.
Police say the fire broke out around 9 p.m. Wednesday on Highland Avenue near Hanford Street.
Middletown fire investigators confirm six people were living inside without electricity for more than a week. Neighbors say police had been called to the house on a number of occasions and that they saw police possibly evicting the tenants hours before the blaze started.
Investigators would not comment, but a source tells News 12 that a barbecue gas grill was found inside a second-story apartment. Neighbors say they heard an explosion before seeing flames.
Police would not confirm why the electricity had been shut off or if the tenants had just been evicted.
Officials say the century-old house is destroyed and will likely be torn down after the investigation, which could take weeks.
No arrests have been made.
