Town of Wallkill officials say they had their first case of gas siphoning in decades - in what has become a national trend.
They say thieves are now bypassing anti-theft devices on cars and using cordless drills to get gas out of tanks from underneath them.
Authorities in the Town of Wallkill say they had their first gas siphoning report in more than two decades late last month, just as gasoline prices started to rise.
The national price of regular unleaded reached record highs this week. The state average is $4.43.
Officials say those prices are once again making gasoline a targeted commodity for black market resale as well as for those who can't afford to fill up at the pump.
