Barges sink, dump tons of stone in Hudson River
Two barges sank near Stony Point Tuesday, dumping 2,100 tons of crushed stone into the Hudson River.
Officials say the barges broke loose from a 13-vessel caravan being pushed by a tugboat. One of the loose barges floated south from the Bear Mountain Bridge before filling up with water and flipping over near Stony Point. The other barge sank north of the Bear Mountain Bridge in Fort Montgomery. The barges were headed to the Tilcon Quarry in Haverstraw.
Investigators believe the tugboat hit land up the river. They say one barge has a hole in it, which is why it filled with water. Officials say the barges are not in the main shipping path.
The Rockland County Sheriff's Marine Unit is working with the Coast Guard to figure out how to salvage the barges and stone from the Hudson River.
