A black bear was seen near Haven Court in Nyack on Memorial Day.

People on that street shared photos of the animal with News 12.

One homeowner says they were happy to see the animal and hope it's safe.

Orangetown police say the same bear, believed to be a cub, was also seen by the Nyack Plaza apartments, which is near the heart of the village’s downtown. They say residents can call them if they see a bear in their area.

The State DEC believes there's at least 6,000 to 8,000 black bears in New York. It says to never approach bears, and to back away slowly from them. The best way to avoid them is to remove food sources. Feeding bears is illegal.

Here's more things you should know.
