News 12 The Bronx took a trip to Southern Boulevard to learn how ice endures the intense summer heat.
The freezers at Big Eddie's Ice House stay at 20 degrees below zero to keep ice from melting. During the summer, owner Eddie Rosario gets over 700 bags of ice delivered a day.
He says a lot of it goes to restaurants and other commercial businesses. He also gets about 125 solid blocks of ice, each slab weighing 300 pounds.
Rosario and his employees cut up the blocks and sell a lot of the chunks to street vendors who make shaved ice treats. He says it can be a challenge to keep up with the demand on really hot days.
One kind of ice that Rosario doesn't have to worry about staying frozen is dry ice, which sits in tubs that are scientifically engineered to keep it cold.
