Drivers on the Hutchinson River Parkway are raising concerns over broken and missing exit signs along the heavily traveled roadway, which sees hundreds of thousands of vehicles each day.

A News 12 viewer recently reached out after noticing several damaged or missing signs, prompting the station to take a closer look.

At Exit 11, one sign is so badly broken it’s easy to miss altogether. Orange traffic cones have been placed in front of the damaged sign, but many drivers say they hadn’t noticed anything was wrong.

"For me, being from New York and the Bronx, Westchester area, I'm kind of used to it," said Marquis Mentor, of Mount Vernon.

While it may not bother some longtime locals, Mentor says the issue could be frustrating for others.

"For people that aren't from here, it's going to bother them because obviously they're using GPS," Mentor said. 'They're not going to know, 'Is this the part where I get off, or do I get off here?' Some people might get lost."

In addition to broken signs, News 12 also spotted several light poles lying on the side of the parkway.

"It's definitely an issue that should be fixed," Mentor added.

News 12 reached out to the New York State Department of Transportation about the concerns. A spokesperson said, in part, that as part of routine maintenance, DOT crews regularly assess highway signs, which are often damaged by severe weather or vehicle collisions. Crews are working to repair or replace damaged signs as quickly as possible.

The department says several signs along the Hutchinson River Parkway are currently being repaired.
