Legendary Bronx Bomber and team broadcaster Phil Rizzuto has died, the Yankees organization confirmed Tuesday.
Rizzuto passed away at the age of 89 after living in a West Orange, N.J. nursing home for several years.
He played shortstop for the Yankees during the 1940s and 50s. Rizzuto, affectionately know as "The Scooter," won seven World Series titles, was an American League MVP and played in five All-Star games.
The Scooter went on to announce games for the Yankees for four decades, using his trademark phrase "holy cow!" The Yankees later retired his number 10 jersey. Rizzuto was the oldest living member of the Baseball Hall of Fame.
"He did everything you have to do to become a Hall of Famer," said News 12/Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Wolff of Rizzuto. "He deserved it."
Yankees owner George Steinbrenner issued a statement saying, "I guess heaven must have needed a shortstop ... He was one of the greatest Yankees of all time."AP wire reports contributed to this story.
