Bronx and city schools now have the funding to build new facilities, however, they are running out of space.
According to a New York Times report, now that the state has authorized more than $11 billion for school construction, the city can?t find the space and create buildings quick enough. New smaller high schools have been popping up around the borough and some say they are creating a turf war among principals. Many of the smaller schools are forced to share buildings and classrooms with larger schools. Usually, the principals of each school then worry about how the shared spaces will manage with a growing student population.
The Times reports approximately 500 students in the Bronx have yet to find out where they will be attending classes in the fall. Meanwhile, the Department of Education is working with principals on making room with the limited space. The department also has plans to make sure enough school construction is completed in the next few years.
