A Bronx family is in mourning after police said a teenager was fatally shot in the head in Morrisania.

The shooting happened shortly after 5 a.m. on Monday on Prospect Avenue between Freeman and E 169th streets.

Police said officers found 16-year-old John Nunez with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead on scene.

“He was there for me, and it’s really heartbreaking that I won’t have that anymore,” said Sol Nunez, the victim's older sister.

Sol said her brother was visiting a friend’s house.

“According to the police, everything was an accident,” said Sol. “[The victim] was at his best friend’s house, so I don’t think anything was intentional towards him.”

An NYPD spokesperson could not confirm to News 12 that the shooting was accidental.

“We don’t know who owns the gun yet,” said Sol. “I sure know it’s not [my brother].”

Sol said Nunez was about to be a high school senior who loved baseball, video games and his family.

“He would come in the house, it was just like the joy came back,” said Sol.

Police sources told News 12 that they’re searching for a man wearing a white shirt and beige shorts in connection with the shooting.
