Polls are open across New York on as voters cast ballots in this year's primary election.

The election will help determine which candidates move on to the general election this fall for several state and federal offices.

Polling sites opened at 6 a.m. and will remain open until 9 p.m.

Unlike the general election, a primary election is used to decide which candidates will represent their political party in November. Because of that, only voters registered with a political party holding a primary can vote in today's election.

Depending on where they live, voters may see races for state comptroller, state Senate, state Assembly and Congress on their ballot.

Several congressional races are drawing attention across New York, with the outcome potentially shaping the state's representation in Washington and influencing the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In parts of Brooklyn and Queens, voters in the 7th Congressional District are choosing who could replace longtime U.S. Rep. Nydia Velázquez, who is retiring after more than three decades in Congress.

Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso is among the candidates seeking the Democratic nomination. State Assemblywoman Claire Valdez is also in the race and has received support from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

Election officials encourage voters to check their polling location before heading out and to make sure they are eligible to vote in today's primary.
