Bronx residents may have to wait until after the 2008 presidential election to use the new electronic voting machines.
New York State is lagging behind in updating the new machines. The state is last in line to change from the lever system to a new electronic one, which is designed to help elderly and disabled voters. The Board of Elections says fault lies with the company that is testing the new software. Also, there are worries that a swift change would leave poll workers improperly trained in case of a large voter turnout.
Some election officials passed a resolution to wait until 2009 to install the new machines. However, the state is required by Congress and a federal court order to place them earlier.
