Residents are being told to remain inside during the air quality alert in the Hudson Valley, but if you have to go out there are ways to protect yourself in your vehicle.
AAA Northeast Senior Manager of Public Affairs Robert Sinclair says drivers should use the recirculation button. He says it's great to use when you are sitting in traffic and air pollution is coming from tailpipes or if there is heavy pollen outside.
"And that takes the air in the vehicle and recirculates it. Keeps it going in there and prevents bringing outside air in, perfect for the conditions we're facing," says Sinclair.
There is also a cabin air filter in your car, but Sinclair says the best way to keep the smoke out is the recirculation button.
Sinclair says if you are worried about visibility with the air quality then be sure to slow down. He says people tend to speed when they can't judge how fast they are going based on what they see around them.
