Many people in one Dutchess County community are wondering: "Who would steal from a nonprofit's thrift shop several times, taking thousands of dollars worth of goods?"
The staff at Compassionate Animal Rescue Efforts of Dutchess County shared with News 12 surveillance video of a woman stealing tables, chairs, shelves, a lamp, a back massager and many other items.
The manager said the woman came to the thrift shop off Route 376 at least six times since mid-May, usually in the middle of the night, most recently hitting it this past Friday and Saturday.
East Fishkill police are investigating.
"She comes multiple times a night," CARE of Dutchess County manager Karen LeCain said. "Sometimes she'll come two nights in a row."
The woman even stole the new planters out front.
"Jill here just went to Sabellico's and purchased the flowers just last week to put in there," LeCain said of her employee's work, "so it was kind of heartbreaking for her."
One video shows the woman trying to remove a large planter that is fastened to the ground, before moving to the other planters, sliding them to her Nissan SUV.
Staff and customers said they are especially irked because every dollar the thrift store generates goes down the road to care for cats and dogs at the nonprofit's shelter.
They recently took in about 30 kittens, including a litter of six, and costs are rising.
"All the profits go to the animals," thrift shop customer Bridget Fahey said. "Why would someone want to take food and shelter out of the animals' mouths. [sic] That's just not right at all."
"The audacity of someone to come in and steal from people who I love doing work that I love? — No," said customer Mary White said, adding that in order to prevent more thefts she plans to volunteer some overnight hours to keep watch over the shop.
