Central Taxi of Scarsdale is in danger of going out of business in a matter of weeks, according to the taxi service and officials.

The taxi service has been serving residents of Edgemont, Greenburgh Hartsdale for many decades. Central Taxi of Scarsdale says they've been driving over 200 residents every day. 

"I've lived here for 45 years so I've used it a lot," says Margaret Reiniger, a Scarsdale resident. "It's been an icon here."       Central Taxi says COVID-19 and changes in the taxi business took a major toll on them.      Everyone from seniors to teens rely on this service and they say a closure could really affect them.   "I've used it to go to the doctors, airports and it's always been reliable," says Reiniger. "I work every single day so I take it very often and it's very, very convenient," says Kayla Marie, a Scarsdale resident.

"When I was little, it would always take me to tennis practice," says Mate Blier, a Scarsdale resident.

While there are other transportation choices, residents say this is the most convenient for them and they value their relationships with drivers.

Now, Central Taxi and officials are looking for ways to save these taxis and keep them on the roads. They're looking for grants and investors to help keep it going. The hope is to find a way for the drivers to get financing to purchase individual vehicles. "You have to buy a certain kind of car and insurance and so the transition is difficult," says Peter Blier, manager of Central Taxi.

Some say there's concerns with relying on rideshare apps. "They're not going to know who's picking up their child," says Greenburgh Town Supervisor Paul Feiner. "There's elderly people who may be technology-illiterate."
