The city is offering NYPD recruits in a raise of about $10,000 during their first year on the job.

The proposal would give recruits an annual salary of more than $36,000. In exchange, new officers would get less vacation days, paid holidays and money toward their retirement during their first five and half years with the NYPD. The contract is retroactive, covering from August 2004 to the end of this July.

The police union responded to the deal saying, "The city expects officers to pay for their own raises while failing to close the gap at all levels of salary between the New York City Police and surrounding communities."
