Civilian seriously injured, firefighter hurt in Coney Island apartment fire
The fire was reported at 2926 W. 25th St., between Surf and Mermaid avenues, at 6:33 a.m.
A fast-moving apartment fire in Coney Island Saturday morning left one resident seriously injured and a firefighter hurt, according to the FDNY.
The fire broke out around 6:33 a.m. at 2926 West 25th Street, between Surf and Mermaid avenues. FDNY crews rushed to the scene as flames tore through the apartment building, with more than 120 firefighters and EMS personnel responding to battle the blaze.
The fire was brought under control at 7:22 a.m., less than an hour after crews arrived. Officials say one resident was transported to a local hospital in serious condition, while a firefighter suffered minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
Hours after the flames were extinguished, water could still be seen pouring from the building into the street as crews worked to secure the damage.
NYCHA and FDNY officials began boarding up the impacted apartment while investigators worked to determine what sparked the fire.
Resident Steve said he woke up and noticed something was wrong when he stepped outside.
"I had just woke up and I just stepped out to go to the store, and then it's just water dripping from inside the elevator, out into the lobbies floors. Yeah, you get to the lobby, you smell gas - like something happened. These buildings, typically this happens, like, all the time," Steve said.
Neighbors say the fire was a frightening scene, but they are thankful more people were not hurt.
Fire marshals are now sifting through the charred apartment and damaged areas of the building as they investigate the cause of the blaze. Officials have not yet released what may have sparked the fire.
