The cash-strapped Clarkstown School District discovered over $5 million in various school bank accounts left over from old capital projects.
However, School Superintendent Margaret Keller-Cogan says the money won't be used to fill the nearly $6 million budget gap, making layoffs inevitable.
"By law, you can't apply it to anything else other than the payments of the original project," Keller-Cogan says.
The superintendent says in the worst-case scenario, 136 positions may be eliminated in the district.
The Clarkstown Board of Education is expected to meet with district leaders before they vote on a final version of a budget later this month. Public hearings on the budget will be held in May.
