A Clifton police officer was injured when a vehicle struck a patrol car on Route 21, causing both vehicles to catch fire, according to police.

Officers were investigating a crash on Route 21 North that occurred near River Road around 4 a.m. Sunday when a separate vehicle traveling north struck one of the patrol vehicles, police said.

The impact caused both vehicles to catch fire, while a second police vehicle was severely damaged.

One Clifton police officer was taken to a hospital with a head injury that was not expected to be life-threatening.

A second officer avoided being struck by jumping out of the way of the oncoming vehicle, according to police.

Police say the driver was not seriously injured and was taken into custody on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
