? Sen. Hillary Clinton, FEMA Director R. David Paulison and other local leaders toured flood-damaged areas of Westchester Monday.
Clinton wants President Bush to issue disaster declarations for parts of the county. If the president issues the declarations, the county could receive federal money for relief.
"We?ll work to see how much help we can get and how soon we can get it," Clinton told affected residents. She is also working to set up a charitable organization for flood relief contributions.
Also making the trip was Homeland Security Director Robert Paulison. His report to the president will be a factor in any possible disaster declaration. Paulison told reporters he felt it was important to see the damage in person.
"I wanted to come here personally," said Paulison. "So we?re not just being ... a bureaucrat looking at something on paper in Washington."
The Army Corps of Engineers was also on the tour. Clinton hopes they can find a way to prevent devastating floods in the future.
More than 200 Mamaroneck residents met with public officials Monday night to discuss flood relief funding. Mamaroneck's mayor asked residents to contact federal authorities directly, saying local leaders might not be able to get results from federal agencies on their own.
