Dozens of residents at Broadview Senior Living at Purchase College are still without electricity two days after an outage.
The power went out around 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday, according to Broadview’s executive director, Ashley Wade, who says the issue started with the facility’s green ATS system — damaged by a squirrel. The outage initially affected all 350 residents of the senior living community.
While the emergency generator kicked in quickly, it only supported limited services and led to some complications, including reducing the number of operational elevators. Within 24 hours, a stronger generator was brought in and is now providing power to about 75% of the community.
However, 45 occupied villas remain without power. Those residents must now rely on amenities in the main building — located about half a mile away.
"A power outage is a concern," said Wade. "So even thought we have tried to make the best out of it we do want to recognize that it has not been without significant sacrifice on their part and effort on ours to try to maintain normalcy."
Resident John Bianrosa praised the response from management, saying, "Most of the people I have spoken to were very happy with the way it was taken care of, again, out of our control."
Building officials say they’ve been in constant contact with Con Edison but still have no timeline for when full power will be restored.
