Rep. Mike Lawler officially kicked off his re-election campaign Sunday in Nanuet, as the Republican looks to hold onto one of the most competitive congressional seats in the country.

“I am proud to stand before you today and announce that I am running for re-election, and we are going to win,” Lawler told supporters at the event.

The first-term representative for New York’s 17th District is expected to face a tough race, with multiple Democratic candidates competing in a primary to challenge him in November.

Voters in Rockland County say affordability is the top issue heading into the election.

“Rockland has become incredibly unaffordable in recent years. Rent, the way prices have increased and wages have not increased to match them at all,” said Colette K., of Nyack.

“Groceries, gas, rent -- everything has gone up a lot. Honestly, there’s a big wage gap,” added Trevor, also of Nyack.

Lawler’s campaign echoed that concern, calling affordability the number one issue for voters. Local Democratic leaders agree.

“Affordability is a big issue, particularly now with the price of gasoline…high utility costs here as well,” said Chair of the Westchester County Democratic Party Suzanne Berger.

With economic concerns front and center, both parties say the race could help shape the direction of the country.

“Our country is at a crossroads,” Lawler said. “The men and women who sit in the House of Representatives next January will have a significant impact on the future direction that we take.”

The Democratic Primary for New York’s 17th Congressional District is scheduled for June 23.
